The University of Texas Permian Basin sits in the heart of the oil and gas industry, making it a smart choice for students pursuing careers in energy.
At UTPB, Falcons build connections with industry leaders, learn from experienced faculty, and gain hands-on opportunities through professional organizations. For Quintin Malo, those connections recently led to a scholarship that will cover his education for the next academic year.
"I've been a member of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) since starting the Energy Land Management Program at UTPB, and I was able to secure the scholarship for the fall 2026 semester and spring 2027 semester," Quintin said. "The scholarship process included a written essay and an in-person interview with the AAPL Scholarship Trust."
A West Texas native, Quintin knew earning his degree in the Permian Basin would give him a competitive advantage. Since enrolling at UTPB, he has found opportunities that have exceeded his expectations.
"The Energy Land Management Program has helped me develop an extensive network in the landman industry," Quintin said. "It has opened doors to events and opportunities in the community and built a strong foundation that I will need as I begin my career."
One of the biggest influences on his journey has been Katherine Harrell, UTPB's Energy Land Management Coordinator.
"She has pushed me to get involved in the program, network within the community and opened doors to industry events, which ultimately led me to my current position at Western Land Services," Quintin said.
The scholarship is also helping Quintin reach his goals sooner than expected.
"It will allow me to take more classes during my last two semesters and give me the opportunity to graduate a semester ahead of schedule," Quintin said.
