Frequently Asked Questions About Form 1098-T

What is IRS Form 1098-T?
It is an informational form filed with the Internal Revenue Service to report the amounts billed to you for qualified tuition, related expenses, and other related information. The primary purpose of the IRS Form 1098-T is to inform you that we have provided this required information to the IRS.

Why did I receive a Form 1098-T?
You may be able to take either the tuition and fees deduction or claim an education credit on
Form 1040 or 1040A for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid during the calendar year.

What am I supposed to do with the Form 1098-T?
Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with tax advice, so we suggest contacting your accountant or tax advisor if you have specific questions about your tax requirements and responsibilities. However, we can inform you that you are not required to attach IRS Form 1098-T to your tax return, but it would be wise to keep it for your records.

How do I get a copy of my 1098-T?

Why does this form not match the total amounts I paid to the university?
University of Texas Permian Basin is required to report payment amounts that applied only to qualified tuition and related expenses. This may be less than the total of payments made to the University if part of those payments also paid charges other than qualified tuition and related expenses. Also, be aware that the amounts posted on the form are reported on a calendar year format and not an academic year.

*Tuition and Fees are just a part of a student’s expenses while attending a particular college. To review the estimated expenses for one year including tuition, housing and food, books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, and miscellaneous expenses here at UT Permian Basin visit our webpage.

Why wasn't the form mailed?
As part of the Student Account Agreement, you consented to receive your form online in PDF format via your UTPB student account page, which can be printed from there.

Why didn't I receive a 1098-T?
It is likely due to one of the following:

  • You are not a US Resident (you are listed as an International (foreign) Student).
  • You received no academic credit for the calendar year.
  • Your entire qualified tuition and related expenses were waived or paid with a scholarship.
  • Your entire qualified tuition and related expenses were paid under a "formal billing
arrangement" where the University bills only an employer or government entity.

The personal information (name, address, TIN, SSN ... ) is incorrect. What should I do?
This was obtained from information provided to UTPB. Mailing addresses can be updated in your student account. Log into your student account, Click on the Profile tile, Select Addresses, then Add your mailing address & Save. Please contact the University Registrar's Office at 432-552-2635 or email registrar@utpb.edu if the home address needs to be updated.
