New Healthcare Management Certificate Offered

The University of Texas Permian Basin is offering a new certificate in Healthcare Management starting in Fall, 2017. The certificate will offer students earning a bachelor of business administration (BBA) or those who already have the degree to learn about the unique issues, challenges, and management tools used by health services organizations such as hospitals, medical practices, wellness centers, and public health units.

UTPB’s new certificate will be offered through web-based courses. The first course will called Healthcare Management Information Systems and will be taught in an eight-weeks term beginning on October 18, 2017. In the Spring 2018 semesterHealthcare Management and Healthcare Marketing will be offered. Additional courses will be added in summer and in Fall 2018 to complete the certificate program.

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment of medical and health services managers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the large baby-boom population ages and people remain active later in life, the healthcare industry as a whole will see an increase in the demand for medical services. “This new certificate helps UTPB business students prepare for careers in one of the fastest growing industries in the country,” said Dr. William Price, dean of the College of Business.

The Texas Workforce Commission’s Report on Texas Growth Occupation 2016 states that the Health Care and Social Assistance industry has become the dominant industry for employment in Texas – and the United States – in the last decade. Demand for health care workers in Texas is expected to continue to increase as the state has growing populations of both old and young people, who are the primary customers of the Health Care and Social Assistance industry. This sector is faced with training challenges as employers are demanding higher educated workers due to market demands and industry expectations.
