The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened on October 1st, 2021 for the 2022-2023 school year. Any student interested in being considered for federal aid to help pay for school after high school is encouraged to apply and students that are already enrolled in a college or university must fill out the FAFSA each year to continue to receive aid for the following school year. Whether it’s your first time or are a returning student here are some tips for filling out the FAFSA:
1. Don’t wait till the last minute
Many institutions offer aid on a first come first serve basis and once the funds run out, they are gone. The sooner you fill out the FAFSA the better your chances are at receiving more aid for that following school year.
2. Your information is safe
The FAFSA is managed by the U.S. Department of Education meaning all information you provide to them is safe and taken care of. No one other than them and your school will know about any information you provided on the FAFSA.
3. You need your parent's signature
If you are a dependent student, you will need a parent’s signature to submit the FAFSA application. Your parent or guardian will have to create their own FSA ID to complete the signature process but only one application needs to be completed.
4. Qualifying for the TASFA
If you do not qualify for the FAFSA you may qualify for the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). The TASFA offers state and institutional aid for students that are Texas Residents. For more information, visit collegeforalltexans.com
