Have you been offered admission to The University of Texas at Austin through the Coordinated Admissions Program (CAP)? If you are unsure what the CAP program is or what should your next steps be, here is what you need to know about starting your CAP journey at The University of Texas Permian Basin.
What is the CAP Program?
The Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) is a transfer pathway offered to Texas residents who apply for freshman admission to The University of Texas at Austin. Through CAP, eligible students begin their college journey at a UT System institution, like UTPB. After completing their first year and all program requirements, students may transfer to UT Austin’s College of Liberal Arts.
As a CAP student, you are guaranteed admission into UT Austin’s College of Liberal Arts, with the exception of some majors within the college. If you are interested in a different degree field, you will have to submit additional information and compete in the transfer applicant pool.
CAP students can ask to be considered in the transfer applicant pool for a non-Liberal Arts major without jeopardizing their automatic admission to Liberal Arts, but admission to most majors is highly competitive.
If you enjoy your time at UTPB and choose to stay instead of transferring, you are welcome to. You will need to meet with an advisor to submit the paperwork to “opt-out” of the CAP program to stay at UTPB.
Why Choose UTPB?
At UTPB, students benefit from a close-knit campus community with small class sizes, hands-on learning, and an incredibly supportive faculty and staff. Students at UTPB have access to a variety of support through mentorship, on campus resources, and spaces to complete work.
Students also have many ways to get involved outside of the classroom. Between classes, clubs and organizations, and athletics, there are many opportunities to connect with other students and build your college experience.
UTPB is also the only CAP program school in the UT system to offer a completely online first year, allowing students the flexibility they may need.
How to Begin the CAP Journey at UTPB
The process begins after you’ve submitted your application to The University of Texas at Austin. Once you receive your admission decision, you may be offered a unique path to becoming a future UT Austin student through the CAP program. From there, you will apply to participate in CAP at UTPB and submit all the necessary information. The program is only offered to students who applied to UT Austin. If you would like to apply to UTPB directly, check out more information on our application page.
Academic Requirements
To transfer to UT Austin through CAP, students must meet the minimum academic requirements. Students must:
-Complete 30 credit hours
-Maintain at least a 3.2 GPA
These 30 credit hours are completed over two semesters: 15 credit hours in the fall and 15 credit hours in the spring. Students should work with an academic advisor to choose courses that meet CAP requirements, support their intended major, and transfer to UT Austin.
Student Life at UTPB
While at UTPB, students are encouraged to engage fully on campus. From academic and special interest clubs to student organizations, there are many opportunities to help you find a community and build connections.
Students may also pursue research, on-campus employment, and internships to strengthen their transfer applications and professional experience.
While campus involvement is not required for CAP students, it demonstrates engagement, leadership, and commitment to your college experience and is therefore highly encouraged.
CAP Student Success
Every year, many UTPB CAP students successfully transfer to UT Austin. Others discover opportunities at UTPB and choose to stay and complete their degree here.
For example, Christian Livengood chose UTPB for its flexible online options, allowing him to stay close to home while starting college. He shares that small class interactions helped him grow as a writer and prepare for his future. Christian plans to continue his studies at UT Austin to pursue a degree in Physical Culture and Sports.
Students like Luke Brunet, however, found their path at UTPB. Luke plans to stay and study Criminology, crediting supportive faculty and a welcoming environment to help shape his career goals.
