The University of Texas Permian Basin’s College of Education offers a 16-credit Superintendent Certification Program designed for principals and assistant principals who want to strengthen their skills as school leaders in their district. The program can be completed online in two semesters.
Welborn started the program in August 2023 and finished in May 2024. He chose UTPB because of the reputation and transferrable skills he would gain. Plus, the flexibility of the program program offered allowed him to finish it while working as a principal, CTE coordinator, and campus-level administrator.
Once he received his certification, Welborn was ready to step right into his new career as Superintendent of Deweyville ISD.
“The coursework blended theory with application, and every assignment connected directly to authentic district work,” Welborn said. “By the time I completed the program, I had already built and practiced many of the systems, communication processes, and planning structures required of a superintendent.”
Welborn believes the superintendent role is about serving students, staff, families, and the community. He says his past leadership positions and the UTPB program helped give me the tools to lead a district with integrity and purpose.
