At The University of Texas Permian Basin, the work you’ve already put in matters. Whether you’re finishing what you started or transferring from a different institution, UTPB makes the process as seamless as possible.
If you’ve completed 24 or more semester hours of college-level coursework, you may qualify as a transfer student, even if you’re returning after a break.
Is It a Good Idea to Transfer Colleges?
Every student’s path looks different, but the goal is often the same: earning a degree.
Some students begin at a community college to complete core courses at a lower cost. Others choose to transfer to be closer to home or pursue a program that better fits their career goals.
For Aaron Solano, affordability played a major role. He began at Midland College before transferring to UTPB in 2021 to pursue mechanical engineering.
Areej Khodair says starting at a community college can also help students explore their options.
“It gives you the chance to save money, explore your interests, and build a strong academic foundation before transferring to a university,” Areej said.

Is it Hard to Transfer Colleges?
Transferring schools can feel overwhelming, but UTPB provides support every step of the way.
The University has established transfer partnerships with Odessa College, Midland College, and Amarillo College, creating clear pathways for students to continue their education.
Transfer specialists are available at each campus to help with applications, financial aid, and advising processes on a student’s path to becoming a Falcon.
“Whenever I had questions or doubts, I could reach out to my Midland College advisor, and they were able to help me,” Areej said. “Additionally, there was a UTPB transfer specialist on the Midland College campus, which was super helpful.”
Plus, transferring from these universities is very simple and can help students feel at ease knowing they keep all their credits.
“The whole process consisted of me sending an official transcript and simply waiting for my confirmation of being accepted, super easy,” Aaron said.
Will My Credits Transfer Colleges?
Students transferring from regionally accredited institutions can bring completed credits with them, but how they apply to your degree may vary.
If you’re worried about classes not applying to your degree, UTPB’s Transfer Calculator can help answer questions.
What GPA is Acceptable for Transferring?
To be considered for admission, transfer students must have a GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Can I Afford to Transfer?
UTPB offers several financial support options, including transfer-specific scholarships, Falcon Free, and third-party scholarships.
These opportunities help make earning your degree more accessible and affordable.
How Will Transferring to UTPB Help My Future?
A bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare you for long-term success, and many transfer students say UTPB helped them grow academically and professionally. With small class sizes, hands-on experiences, and strong faculty support, you’ll be ready to begin your career as soon as you leave the nest.
“Coming to UTPB has been a major turning point in both my academic journey and my future career goals,” Areej said. “It gave me the opportunity to build on the strong foundation I developed in community college while challenging myself at a higher level.”
“Since coming to UTPB, I have learned how to manage my time wisely, invest in long-term goals, and am currently reaching the start of my engineering career,” Aaron said.
