Biology Programs
This knowledge comes to us organically.
Do words like “dissection” and “denature” make you hop? Do you kneed biological experimentation like the femur needs the patella? If you found these even remotely humerus, then a biology degree is for you.
UT Permian Basin offers six separate undergraduate degrees, two master’s, an accelerated master’s, and a minor just for biology. We want you to select the path most aligned to your interests and career goals.

Why should I study biology?
Biology is one of the broadest and most important subjects in the world. Put simply, it is the study of life.
Majoring in biology gives you many professional opportunities including careers in pharmaceutical sales, occupational health and safety, conservation science, teaching, or biological technician. UT Permian Basin’s Biology program has degree plans tailored to your career goals.
What are my job prospects?
Bright—just like you. Many people use a bachelor's in biology as the first step of a professional career in medicine, medical research, or another health science. Those growing careers require graduate or professional school after your bachelor's.
Other people add teacher certification to this major so they can be the one who assigns that frog dissection.
Society also needs people who can speak biology to connect companies through sales, marketing, public health, and science writing. Your major can lead to careers in:
- Pharmaceutical sales
- Environmental science
- Occupational health and safety
- Conservation science
- Teaching
- Biological technician
The job outlook for medical scientists is growing at the above average rate of 17%. The rates for pharmacists, registered nurses, and postsecondary teachers are increasing, as well. UT Permian Basin prepares you to "cell" yourself!
What industry-specific skills will I learn?
Learn to curate experiments and use laboratory equipment. We offer research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of:
- Microbiology
- Physiology
- Genetics
- Molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s diseases
- Evolutionary Biology and Ecology
Our Biomedical Research Center (BRC) focuses on areas such as neuron-degenerative disease, selective drug delivery mechanisms, and CO releasing molecules as pharmaceutical drug systems. Depending on the major you choose, the skills you learn include surgery, analytical thinking, or learning the interrelationship of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis.
What if I want to teach?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment in education is projected to grow 7% through 2031. Learn about the two pathways we offer for you to become certified to teach in Texas.
