Laptop Lending Policy

Technology Lending Policy

  • The technology lending service library allows UTPB students, faculty, and staff to borrow a laptop, hotspot, or other technology for temporary use.
  • An individual who checks out a technology item automatically accepts responsibility for safeguarding the items checked out.
  • Borrowers may not have overdue books or more than $25 in fines or fees at the time of equipment checkout.
  • Borrowers will be asked to complete the Equipment Lending User Agreement during checkout. A new agreement must be completed by every borrower each semester.
  • Technology is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • When the technology becomes 14 days overdue, the item will be assumed lost.
  • Technology borrowers are responsible for notifying the Access Services Desk immediately about damage, loss, or theft.
  • The table below shows the loaning periods, late fees /charges, and replacement costs for any lost technology. The library will determine the repair cost for any returned but damaged technology, including accessories.

Laptop Returns

Laptop computers must be returned in person and handed to a library employee at the Access Services Desk. The laptop user will need to be prepared to wait until the staff verifies the laptop, the accessories are returned, and the machine is in good condition.

Reporting Damage, Loss, or Theft of Laptops

  • Laptop borrowers are responsible for notifying the Access Service Desk immediately about damage, loss, or theft.
  • Damage and loss reports should be sent to the library by email at libraryservices@utpb.edu or by calling the Access Services Desk at 432-552-2372.
  • In case of theft, a report will also need to be made in person to the University Police or by phone at 432-552-2787.

College of Education Diagnostic Kit Policy

  • The library, in collaboration with the College of Education, hosts and manages the College's diagnostic kits.
  • Students check out diagnosis kits for fourteen (14) days with a 1-time renewal.
  • Faculty may check out kits for one year.
  • A kit is declared lost after being overdue for 15 days.
  • Students will be asked to sign a user agreement before checking out a kit.
  • A University ID is necessary to check out a kit.
  • If a student does not turn in their kit, it will be declared lost, and total replacement charges will be processed.
  • Distance Education Students can check out kits. The library will mail the diagnostic kit following the usual distance student procedures. Return dates will be determined by the postmark date.

Computer Use

Computers are available to students, faculty, and staff who are currently enrolled or employed by The University of Texas Permian Basin.

  • Library computers may not be used for commercial purposes and must be used in compliance with state and federal laws [See: Texas Penal Code, Chapter 33. Computer Crimes].
  • Proof of identity is required and to be available on request.
  • Currently enrolled UTPB students are given priority.
  • The University of Texas Permian Basin makes library workstations available to faculty, staff, currently enrolled students, and the general public.
  • Patrons who violate policy and/or state and federal laws may be subjected to legal, disciplinary, or other appropriate action, including the loss of access to the computers and/or the library itself.

Course Reserves Policy

Course Reserves is a collection of often-used resources that have been selected by the faculty for class use. These resources usually have very limited loan periods.

  • A Reserve Request Form must be completed for each item
  • The library cannot photocopy items for faculty
  • The library cannot place on reserve any material that belongs to other institutions/libraries
  • The library is not responsible for the loss or damage of personal items placed on Reserve
  • Reserve items are kept for one semester only

Archives and Special Collections Use Policy

  • All materials must be used in the Archives/Special Collections public study area.
  • First-time patrons must read and sign a form outlining the rules for the use of materials.
  • Photocopying is subject to restrictions of copyright, the fragility of materials, and restrictions by the donor.
  • Photocopying is done by staff and is paid for at the Accounting Office.
  • The Archives are accessible by appointment only.
