At The University of Texas Permian Basin, first-generation students make up more than half of the student population. For Cesar Vasquez, that community has played an important role in helping him navigate college and find opportunities to grow.
Navigating the First-Gen Experience
Cesar is a senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. While his parents did not attend college, his sister did and has helped guide him through parts of the experience. Even with that support, Cesar said being a first-generation student comes with challenges many students must learn to overcome on their own.
“As a first-generation student, I have faced several challenges, including navigating a University website, applying for scholarships, and making sure my transcripts and paperwork were in order,” Cesar said.
Finding Confidence and Leadership
Despite those obstacles, Cesar quickly found a sense of belonging on campus.
He discovered the first-generation student organization while touring campus in high school. The moment stuck with him.
“I knew right away that it was something I wanted to be a part of,” Cesar said. “I attended my first meeting alone and introduced myself to a room full of strangers. Only a few weeks later, I was on stage with them in a lip-sync battle.”
The experience helped Cesar build connections and confidence. Today, he serves as Vice President of the organization, where he works to support other students who are navigating college for the first time in their families.
Through his leadership, Cesar hopes to continue growing the organization into a welcoming space where first-generation students feel supported and encouraged to succeed.
UTPB’s Promise to First-Gen Students
UTPB understands the challenges first-generation students can experience. Within the University’s Executive Cabinet are leaders who were first-generation students themselves. That perspective helps shape a commitment to making higher education more accessible for every Falcon.
UTPB hosts events such as Falcon Day, FAFSA/TASFA nights, and other informational sessions designed to guide students and their families through the college process. The University also offers a Welcome Center, One Stop, and dedicated staff members who are ready to answer questions and help students take the next step toward their future.
Take Flight at UTPB
“The atmosphere here is welcoming and supportive, and it truly feels like a place where anyone can find their place,” Cesar said.
UTPB is a place where students from all backgrounds can find community, support, and opportunity. If you are ready to pursue your goals and take the next step toward your future, UTPB is ready to help you get there.
