Advanced undergraduate students at The University of Texas Permian Basin can earn both a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in History in as little as five years through the Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP).

The AMP allows eligible students to begin taking graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree, helping you build advanced research, writing, and analytical skills sooner—while staying on a streamlined path to your master’s degree.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the AMP in History, students must meet the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a UTPB undergraduate History program
Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and a 3.25 GPA in the History major
Have 30 or fewer credit hours remaining to complete the bachelor’s degree
Receive faculty approval from the History Department
No GRE required for AMP students

What is the Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) in History?
The AMP allows qualified undergraduate History majors at UT Permian Basin to begin graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree. Students can earn both a B.A. in History and an M.A. in History on an accelerated timeline.

How long does it take to complete the AMP?
Students can complete both degrees in as little as five years, depending on course planning and academic progress.

When should I apply to the AMP?
Students may apply once they have 30 or fewer credit hours remaining in their bachelor’s degree and meet the GPA requirements. Early planning with a faculty advisor is strongly encouraged.

What GPA is required for admission?
To be eligible, students must:

Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
Have a minimum 3.25 GPA in History coursework
Receive approval from the History Department

Do I need to take the GRE?
No. The GRE is waived for students admitted to the Accelerated Master’s Program.

Will I have to complete a thesis?
The AMP follows the non-thesis option of the Master of Arts in History program.

How many graduate credit hours can I take as an undergraduate?
Eligible students may begin taking approved graduate-level History courses while completing their bachelor’s degree. An advisor will help determine appropriate coursework and timing.

Do AMP students receive both degrees?
Yes. Students earn both the Bachelor of Arts in History and the Master of Arts in History upon successful completion of all program requirements.

What happens if I decide not to continue to the master’s degree?
Graduate coursework completed under AMP guidelines may still count toward undergraduate requirements where applicable, but students should consult with their advisor before making changes to their academic plan.
