Mathematics Master's Degree in Applied Statistics and Data Science

Master of Arts (MA) in Mathematics in Applied Statistics and Data Science

One radical change in the Digital Age is that information that was once scattered and disordered can be amassed and studied. This natural aggregation of "stuff" creates a new need for Statisticians. The area is called Data Science. UTPB offers a track to prepare students for this challenging field.

Graduate Mathematics Program Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours of coursework leading to the baccalaureate degree
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
  • GRE Scores (Optional)
    • Entrance Scores (ES) = 1600 minimum Entrance Score (ES) = (GPA x 267) + (GRE Quantitative Score x 5.23) (GPA equates to 50% of the decision, GRE Quantitative Reasoning equates to 50% of the decision)
  • At least one of the following courses or their equivalent with a B or better (Math 4315 Algebraic Structures or Math 4360 Intermediate Analysis)

Conditional Admission

If a student has a GPA below 3.0 but not lower than 2.75 in the last 60 credit hours a student will be considered for admission based on their complete application. The committee will review upper-level math courses taken to determine appropriate preparation in terms of courses taken and GPA associated with relevant mathematics courses deemed necessary for success in a graduate math program. Conditionally admitted students may be required to take leveling courses before being fully admitted to the Mathematics graduate program and will have to maintain the required CGPA to remain a graduate student.
